AssessmenT

Assessment is integral to high quality teaching and learning. It helps us to ensure that our teaching is appropriate and that learners are making at least expected progress.

Across our school we will ensure that;

  1. Assessment is fair, inclusive and free from bias.

  2. Assessment is open, honest and transparent.

  3. Assessment secures high expectations for all.

  4. Assessment is appropriate to age, task and desired information.

  5. Assessment is accurate and consistent.

  6. Assessment supports comparison with other schools, both locally and nationally

  7. Assessment outcomes provide meaningful and understandable information for pupils, parents and school staff

Assessment - subject leaders will ensure the following...

  • English and maths outcomes are recorded at the end of each term and once a year for the other subjects (at the end of the academic year) on Arbor.
  • Children's outcomes (data) will be evaluated to spot performance trends across the school, including identifying underachieving pupils or groups of children and creating and implementing effective plans of action.
  • Advise and make suggestions to colleagues about assessments that can be used and help members of staff make assessment judgements of pupils.
  • Ensure assessments are manageable and consider workload for teaching staff.

Assessment Milestones

  • For subjects apart from English and maths, teacher assessment judgements are based on Assessment Milestones.
  • Assessment milestones are not exhaustive but designed as a guide to help teachers assess children’s attainment. A child who is meeting each of these milestones (in both knowledge and skills) is working at the expected level (EXS). If there is any milestone not yet met, then the child is ‘working towards’ the expected level (WTS). A child exceeding these milestones is working at ‘greater depth’ (GD).
  • Teacher judgements will be formed using a ‘best fit’ of the following evidence: children’s books; key questioning; children’s comments during lessons; occasional summative assessments such as a final piece of work, a performance or, where appropriate, a test. Below is an example of an Assessment Milestone grid for Science.
  • Teachers will record outcomes of the Assessment Milestone on the record sheet. Below is a record sheet for the Year 3 Science Assessment Milestones.
