Dear Families,

Here are your Friday Reminders: please, check your ParentPay account regularly as we have a big number of outstanding payments for various items (school lunches, swimming, Y4 lollies, school trips...). Patcham Junior School has saved £21,761 in electricity costs since installing the solar panels in 2020, and reduced its CO2 emissions by 35.73 tonnes. This is equivalent to planting 559 trees saplings. (BHESCo Report 2025)

"THIS WEEK'S SUSTAINABILITY TIP"

Sustainable Valentine’s Day – Richard Cadbury, son of the man who founded Cadbury Chocolate, was the first to start packing chocolates in heart-shaped boxes. More than 36 million heart-shaped chocolate boxes are sold each year, amounting to some 58 million pounds of chocolate.
Additionally, a
pproximately £100m is spent for 4 million cut-flower bouquets every Valentine’s Day in the UK, mostly imported from abroad. Although generally compostable, the majority of these flowers end up in land-fields, due to the high amount of chemicals used to treat and decorate them.

       What can you do?

  • ·        Choose British-grown flowers (preferably potted plants that last longer then cut flowers), or Fairtrade-certified chocolates

Â·        Cook a meal together with local and seasonal ingredients, or choose a local restaurant to sustain small businesses

Â·        Gift home-made cards with pictures that can then be framed

Â·        Opt for activities or a day-out experience, rather than material gifts

Â·        Remember that LOVE in more important than anything else!

Our Sustainability Plan page is regularly updated with all the steps Patcham Junior is taking towards Zero Net 2030, and you can find all weekly Sustainablility Tips added at the bottom of the page.

Please check our board at the main gate for more information on how you can help us

Mrs Morra (Sustainability Leader) has gathered a variety of seeds from Seedy Sunday event and donated them to the upcoming Kitchen Garden! They’re all either local or heritage seeds and we can’t wait to see our first yield! Also, Nurture groups have braved the wind and rain to spot as many different birds as they could within our school grounds. In only one hour they recorded:1 Blackbird, 4 Carrion crows, 2 Robins, 14 Feral Pigeons, 3 Herring gulls and 5 Jackdaws! They received a certificate signed by Sir David Attenborough and the Big School’s Birdwatch one too! Well done!
